The target article by Professor Gary Hook (2007) gives fresh impetus to reintegrating Māori culture with education. Far-reaching proposals for Māori education are indicated, which can be visualized as a system emanating from marae, through wānanga which accommodate both secondary needs and tertiary aspirations and culminating in a research based university. In his paper, Hook makes a further contribution the genealogy of Māori educational theory.
As with any inspiring vision, practical steps follow, considerations and queries arise. Some of these are explored in this commentary.
