I’ve recently started my PhD and my supervisor has recommended I think about presenting at an international conference in my second or third year. Although this sounds exciting I’m a bit nervous about it. I’m also wondering what kinds of funding are available and how I can find information about the best conferences in my field.
Recently, I presented a talk at a conference and am considering writing up the paper for the conference proceedings. However, I also thought that it might be nice to submit our research to a journal so as to reach a wider audience. The two questions that have arisen are:
1) Can one submit to a journal a paper that has the same or similar content as one that is being submitted as a conference proceeding?
2) What are the relative career merits of publishing in a proceedings or a journal?

A recent conversation with some Māori students reminded me of a common anxiety:
“I am worried that in writing my thesis I will become more ‘colonised’ in my thinking, because I have to conform to western academic conventions. My Māori being will get lost”.

Recently, we completed our first major conference and it was a great success. However, a key theme in our de-briefing and evaluation of the process was that there must be a better way of handling the mass of detailed tasks. We do not have the financial resources to hire professional conference organizers. Are there any web-based systems that might help us next time?
